Where Is The DTH Adapter Installed?

The Function of the Transition Adapter
The transition adapter serves as a critical connecting component in a down-the-hole (DTH) drill rig; much like a joint in the human body, it is responsible for transmitting power and dampening vibrations. The transition adapter on the Kaishan 430H model is constructed from alloy steel and performs two primary functions:

Power Transmission Hub: It transmits the rotational force generated by the rotary head to the drill pipe.

Vibration Dampening Center: It absorbs the high-frequency vibrations produced by the hammer (percussive unit).

Rotary Head vs. Hammer
These two components can be likened to the transmission and engine of an automobile:

Rotary Head: Responsible for providing continuous rotational force, operating at a speed of approximately 0–60 rpm.

Hammer: Generates high-frequency percussive force at a rate of 2,000 impacts per minute.

The transition adapter *must* be installed at the output end of the rotary head, as the intense vibrations generated by the hammer would otherwise cause premature fatigue in the connection point. Actual field data indicates that improper installation can reduce the service life of the adapter by as much as 70%.

Practical Installation Guidelines
Correct installation can be accomplished in just three steps:

Clean the Interface: Use diesel fuel to remove any rock cuttings or debris from the threads.

Align and Center: Ensure that the axial deviation between the rotary head and the drill pipe is less than 0.5 mm.

Control Pre-tightening Force: Set the torque wrench to a range of 180–200 N·m.

Remember to apply molybdenum disulfide grease to the threads; this serves the dual purpose of preventing rust and facilitating easier disassembly in the future.
